INTRODUCTION

Poseidon is the god of the sea, earthquakes, storms, floods, droughts, and horses.  He is an Olympian god and therefore resides on Mt. Olympus.  Poseidon is most often depicted as a muscular man with a dark beard wielding a three-pronged spear called a trident, his official symbol.

Poseidon is the son of the Titan Kronos and Rheia, daughter of the earth goddess Gaia and the sky god Uranus.  Poseidon is the brother of Zeus, Hades, Demeter, Hestia and Hera.

Poseidon married Amphitrite, queen goddess of the sea and the eldest of the fifty Nereides.  Their son, Triton, was a fish-tailed sea god known to calm the waves of the sea with his conch-shell trumpet.
